The album is a fairly refreshing folk metal with some prog elements and some light synth work. The female vocalists voice is beautiful and since everything is in Spanish, I can pretend she’s singing about having sex with me. It’s free and certainly worthy of a download.

Moonsorrow is back, thank the earth and sky. The album is dubbed, true to the band’s grey lyricism, Varjoina Kuljemme Kuolleiden Maassa (As Shadows We Wander In The Land Of The Dead), and it’s to be released on the 21st of February. The album will have seven tracks, four long, three short (i.e. long short long short long short long) – a cool recasting of the short ‘intro track’ (which has so far been an institution in Moonsorrow’s music) as the ‘interlude track’.

The preview is exciting. There is a real vitality to be heard here, which is welcome in a genre which currently lacks strength. Expect a full review when its released.

For now, listen at their myspace.

I’ve always loved the concept behind Tron. The idea of a man being able to go inside a computer program is beyond incredible in any geek’s most romantic of fantasies. The problem with it is that when they tried to make a movie out of it in the 80s, technology back then wasn’t so kind to imaginative minds (although you could argue that George Lucas did a lot more with it, and he did it back in the 70s). That is why this new Tron movie had me excited; because with today’s crazy CG shit the world of the Grid could be realized to its full potential. I went to see this yesterday to dazzle at the on-screen fireworks, but I was amazingly surprised to everything else that is in this movie.

Sure, TRON’s story is nothing to write home about, especially if you’ve seen the original. It’s a classic shift up from the old generation to the new, putting the spotlight on the young man while still preserving the old one. You can watch this movie and enjoy it solely like that, a nice story with amazing visuals, but there’s a lot more going on there.

I went to see it with my little 11 year old cousin, who I believe fell asleep towards the end and when we got out and asked him if he had gotten the messages from the movie, he was like: “Messages? In movies?”. So since it is my belief that TRON’s wisdom will fly over most people’s heads, I’ve compiled this handy “4 Messages” list to better help you understand what makes this movie great. Here we go:

TRON’s 4 Messages for Mankind

1. Information and Knowledge do not belong to anyone, they belong to everyone. The movie kicks off with Flynn’s son stealing his dad’s company newest operating system, and releasing it for free on the web the very same night the company is announcing its launch. Now Flynn’s son is actually the biggest shareholder in the company, so he knows the consequences of this, but he does it anyway, because he believes in a world where everyone should have free access to all and any information and knowledge. He understands this is the only way we can move forward as humanity.

2. Even in the worst of times, there is always a way out. When Flynn’s son finally meets his dad, trapped inside the Grid, he finds a very defeated man. With no hope of ever getting out. But through Flynn’s son persistence and passion, he manages to turn things around and get out of the Grid. It wasn’t easy, and some sacrifices had to be made along the way, but ultimately, if you put your mind to it, you will find an exit.

3. We humans are capable of doing anything we set our minds to. We are not computers, we are not programmed to follow a set of commands like our society would have us do till our deaths. We have an incredible potential for greatness, and we need to realize that if we’re ever going to change our world for the better.

4. Our world is perfectly beautiful as it is. This last message is delivered towards the end of the movie, and I thought was the most bold one, seeing as the entire movie is a glorification of our technical prowess in the digital and make-believe world, yet the movie just begs you to put down your cellphones, turn off your computers, log off your IM client, shut down your videogames and… look at the sunrise. Is there anything more beautiful than that? Is there anything more interesting and fascinating than our natural world? Do we need to continue in this never-ending quest of trying to “perfect” or “enhance” our world through technology? TRON says no; just stop for a second and realize that your quest for the next big thing is nothing compared to everything you’ve had all along, you just haven’t bothered to really see it.

Gogo said I could be reading too much into it, but he also suggested I post this. So there you go. Definitely watch the movie, maybe you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Over here at Metalscape, The Greatest Metal Podcast of all Time, we like to entertain the idea of listeners actually requesting songs to be played on the show by actually playing them (from time to time). Now if we were at all serious about this program, we would not allow requests at all.

Well why the fuck not? For starters, if are, as we claim to be, the best metal podcast out there, we shouldn’t rely on our listeners to make up our playlist. Seems both lazy and un-professional. But the biggest reason against playing requests is that 90% of the time we simply do not like the music being requested. Simple as that. Yeah I know you love your favorite band and they’re awesome and everything but guess what? I hate them. And I hate you.

But now we’re giving you the opportunity to show us different.

There are those rare occasions when some dude comes out of nowhere and requests a song that is genuinely awesome. And in the best of cases, it actually makes us want to look up that band to see if they’re a one hit wonder or if they’re actually good. Most of the time they’ll have a couple of cool songs but that’s it, but sometimes they end up being the greatest band we’ve never listened to. And that dude has now become part of Metalscape lore. And that dude can be you.

And it is in that spirit that I’m throwing out this challenge to all our listeners: Send me an e-mail, comment or write on our Facebook with a song you think will fuck our shit up. A song that’s fucking awesome and will have us headbanging all the way like morons in front of our webcams. A rifftastic collection of sonic destruction that will shatter our brains through undiluted musical greatness. A song that will restore my faith in metal. Think you can do that?

All of our listeners are more than welcome to enter (all 14 of you), but in the end, only 8 random songs will be selected. These 8 tracks will all be played on a future episode and will be reviewed LIVE DURING THE SHOW without mercy. Remember that this is Metalscape, so if you are a listener then we probably know you pretty well (not really hard to keep track of 14 people), so your song will also put your reputation on the line…

Winner will also be announced LIVE DURING THE SHOW and will get a brand new and yet-to-be-revealed Metalscape Request Challenge Master shirt for free.

Interested? Start requesting!

When I think of my favorite metal albums of all time, dear albums of mine, mostly from my young and careless age spring to mine. Releases by Stratovarius, Strapping Young Lad, Symphony X, Decapitated, Meshuggah and the like.

Those bands all have at least one amazing album out there. And it’s fantastic metal music. In some cases, some of the heaviest metal music ever recorded in fact; But I’m not too sure that it’s heavy enough to transcend metal. Is it heavy enough to break through the chainmail orb of metalness and blow minds elsewhere? Think of it, could songs from your regular favorite metal bands be stripped of their heavy distorted guitars, over-compressed drums and screaming/growling/shrieking/pig-squealin’ and still sound amazing?

Could they be your favorites song ever without all the elements that make it metal (and that make you love it in turn), and just connect to you in music’s most basic principle of melody, space and emotional evocation?

Every song on Ahab’s “The Call of the Wretched Sea” album can. It could also do it in its present form, which is I think, the best sounding one.
